But Robinson took his chance on the summer tour of Japan and returned from the Far East with glowing endorsements from the coaching staff, in particular Shaun Edwards.
"Rugby is a game of ups and downs and it is how you cope with that," said Robinson.
"Eli had an outstanding season and I had no arguments not getting into the Six Nations squad.
"I enjoyed last season more as it went on. I felt as if I was playing better and getting more into the game towards the end of it.
"I didn't want the season to end because I felt as if I was progressing and getting better.
"Personally I enjoyed the conditions with the hard pitch and the dry ball in Japan so I was happy.
"We dug in well for the first win and showed a lot of character, but the second Test just got away from us.
"There are some really good young players coming through though and the morale was great.
"Shaun is a very straight down the line character and if you are doing something bad he will tell you," said Robinson.
"So to have some nice comments from him is good and you take it as a positive.
"He does not say much, but when he speaks you listen and take advice.
"If you mess up once he will forgive you, but if you do it again he will chop your head off.
"He is a very honest coach and that is very refreshing."
But Robinson is well aware of the competition he faces with British & Irish Lions wings George North and Alex Cuthbert in possession of the Welsh jerseys.
However he insists he can only focus on his own game and hopes to showcase his talents on Cardiff Arms Park's new artificial pitch.
"You can't control how well they play," said the 20-year-old.
"You have to focus on number one and just need to train hard and play well. If you do that your opportunities will come.
"The Arms Park is a great stadium, but the pitch was not up to scratch. I am not sure whether I would have survived if I'd had another year on that sludge patch.
"All credit to Richard Holland for going ahead with the decision because it would have taken a lot of bottle. As soon as the new pitch is finished I am going to go down there and see how fast it is.
"I like running rugby and am looking to get the ball in my hands."
