The only North Walian ever to coach Wales, Tony Gray was Wales's National Coach between 1985 and 1988 and took Wales to third place in the first ever Rugby World Cup in Australia in 1987. He was named European coach of the year in 1988 when his side won the Triple Crown, but a disastrous tour of New Zealand followed, when Wales were heavily beaten twice by the All Blacks. He was a selector for Wales prior to this role, in the early 1980s.
Gray gained two caps for Wales in the 1968 Five Nations Championship and made two non-capped appearances in the same year for the Wales XV; both matches were against Argentina. Gray played domestically for Newbridge and London Welsh, captaining the side in the Championship winning 1971-1972 season.
