But had he not gambled with rugby the 6ft 4in, 17st 4lb powerhouse could still be trading hits in the ice ring.
"Growing up I played a lot of ice hockey and volleyball. I played junior hockey but if you want to pursue it you have to pick very early - at about 15," said Ardron.
"I was caught between hockey and rugby and left it a bit late so I just the other path.
"It isn't that big in Canada but I got into the right group of people and made it my number one sport."
But having made a name for himself on the Sevens circuit he aims to make a major impression at the Ospreys after taking the advice of Gareth Rees.
"A lot of great Canadian players have come to Wales and one of those is Gareth Rees, who is our manager at Rugby Canada," added Ardron
"I talked to him and he has a lot of good words about living and playing in Wales.
"These guys represented our country really well, not just as players but as people. Hopefully Jeff and myself can do the same but also make our own legacy.
"The Ospreys are one of if not the best teams in the league and the expectation is to win, we wouldn't be happy with a lot less."
