The under 15s competition was an evenly-contested tournament between both new and experienced teams: Cardiff Quins, a combined team from Furnace and Cardigan, Newport, Neath and Colwyn Bay. The eventual winners were an unbeaten Cardiff Quins side with Colwyn Bay coming runners up. Colwyn Bay should be congratulated on their commitment to women's rugby, also travelling down to Builth Wells the previous weekend to participate in the summer skills programme.
The under 18s competition was dominated by a strong team from Neath who won the competition with an unbeaten record. However, the other three teams, Cardigan, Colwyn Bay and Newport fought hard for the runners up spot which was eventually taken by Newport.
Six teams entered the senior competition: Cardiff Quins, Waunarlwydd, University of Wales Newport, Neath, Pontyclun and Blackwood. With division 1, division 2 and new teams competing, some games resulted in crushing defeats but others were close-fought matches with all players giving 100% for their teams. The clear and unbeaten winners were Cardiff Quins with Neath finishing runners up with their only defeat being to the Quins.
There were some exceptional skills on display in all three age groups, closely watched by Welsh under 20s coach Chris Garrett, and senior coaches, Jason Lewis and Aled Thomas. The tournament was a great success and thanks must be given to the match officials.
Sophie Bennett, head coach of Cardiff Quins and WRU Women's Elite Manager, said, ?We are really pleased with this tournament win which gives us a great start to the season. We used a mixture of internationals, club players and even four players that had never played rugby so this was a chance for everyone to get the opportunity to take part.
"We are keen to get another successful season, hopefully retaining the Cup and looking to do better in the league. It is also key for us as to continue to develop players at their various levels, from the new players to our experienced internationals."
