Born in Zambia, winger Dafydd James joined the Llanelli Scarlets in 2005 from the NEC Harlequins. James was a Llanelli member between 1999 and 2001, other previous clubs include Bridgend and Pontypridd and he also played for the Celtic Warriors. James has represented the Scarlets as team Captain.

James had a strong domestic 2006–2007 season with the Scarlets, making 26 appearances and scoring eleven tries for his club. In scoring a try for the Scarlets in their impressive away win at London Irish ealr in the season, James became the first player in Heineken Cup history to score twenty-five tries in the tournament. James won an ERC Elite Award for his effort, the try came in his eleventh season of European rugby and in his fifty-first appearance in the Heineken Cup. His current Heineken Cup try count stands at 28.

James has been a British and Irish Lions squad member; he played in all three tests against Australia in 2001, scoring a try in the first. After a three year absence, James was recalled into the Wales squad for the 2005 autumn internationals, playing against South Africa and in the 24-22 victory over Australia. He also appeared against Ireland and France in the 2006 RBS Six Nations.

James was called into the squad for Wales's two-Test tour to Australia in May 2007 but was to play no part in the tour after sustaining a knee injury. After undergoing a subsequent knee operation, James was named in Gareth Jenkins's 41-man preliminary Rugby World Cup 2007 summer training squad. He was the sole scorer in Wales's loss to England in August, was selected in Jenkins's final 30 man RWC squad and played in the Invesco Perpetual Summer Series match against Argentina.

James played in one of Wales's Pool B encounters at the Rugby World Cup; he made a try-scoring appearance against Japan at the Millennium Stadium in the 72-18 victory.
