Sam began his rugby career at Brynmawr Youth before joining Ebbw Vale as a back row. He currently one of the Wales Sevens core players and played for Cardiff Met when he was undertaking a Sport & Exercise Science scholarship.

A former county footballer with Gwent, Sam has also previously represented his country at rugby league where he was capped for Wales against England at Bridgend's Brewery Field.

He reached his 100th match on the World Series during the 2016 Hong Kong tournament where Wales reached the Cup quarter-finals. With one round left in the 2015/16 World Series, Cross led the tackle charts with 114 next to his name.

He was one of three Wales core Sevens players (Luke Treharne and Luke Morgan being the others) to make the initial extended GB 7s Men's squad for Rio, which was announced in May.
