In February 2007 Owens lined up as a member of the newly formed Wales U20 side for the 2007 U21 Six Nations.

His senior breakthrough season came in 2009/10, where he was voted Scarlets’ player of the season, Welsh Rugby Writers’ player of the season and was named in the Magners League Dream Team.

He made his Welsh debut against Namibia at the Rugby World Cup in 2011 and featured four times in the Grand Slam campaign of 2012, and played in all five as Wales retained the Championship in 2013.

Owens has featured in every game for Wales since the beginning of the 2013 Dove Men Series.
