Rugby Development: Referees

Welsh Rugby Union Referees

Referees

The Welsh Rugby Union is responsible for recruiting and developing Match Officials to officiate games, at all levels, within Welsh rugby and throughout international competitions.

This includes tournaments such as The Rugby World Cup, Rugby Championship and RBS 6 Nations at elite level, however it is at the grass roots level of the game that referees are recruited, trained and learn the environment of being a rugby union match official.

Have you ever thought about becoming a referee? Being an integral part of the game in Wales, whether you are an ex-player or just have a keen interest, here are the some of the skills you will need:

Referees require excellent management skills and the ability to make crucial decisions under, at times, large amounts of pressure. Referees uphold the laws of the game not only to guarantee a fair contest but also, as in scrummaging, to keep the game clean and safe. A sound knowledge of the game of rugby and good degree of general fitness are also desirable for this adrenaline-fuelled and highly rewarding role but can be picked up easily enough with practice.
