“With any injury, someone else gets an opportunity and we are very lucky to have someone like Alun to step into his shoes. We have Will James on the bench and it will be great experience for them both," he said.

Ospreys second row Evans hasn't played since December 27th, but the Welsh team medics have given him the green light to go to the Rugby World Cup after it was initially feared his shoulder injury would sideline him for the tournament.

However, McBryde knows Monday’s training ground injury was untimely for Evans.

"It's a blow for Ian, especially as he needs rugby time having not played since the end of last year. This has come at a difficult time again for him, although it is encouraging news that it isn't long term," added McBryde.

"Ian has impressed in training. He has really raised the bar since coming back from the injury - it was just a bit of bad luck that has forced him out on Saturday.

"It is hugely frustrating for him, but these things both test and build character. Ian came back from his shoulder operation and I'm sure he will bounce back from this."
