Leading the way: Wales Women 4 England Women 22
The very first clash with the 'old enemy' in women's rugby took place at Pontypool Park back in 1987. Wales Women and England Women went head-to-head in what was the first competitive women's international rugby union Test match for either of the two nations. This edited archive video footage from 1987 neatly captures the essence of what became an historic occasion, a fixture which celebrated its twentieth anniversary in 1987.

The first match was played in on Sunday 5th April 1987 at Pontypool Park with England winning 4-22. The Wales Women team from that day was made up of many players who continued to represent their country over the years, with most impressive being Liza Burgess, who played until the end of the 2006-2007 season achieving the remarkable feat of playing in the very first game and the twentieth anniversary match at the end of the 2007 Women's Six Nations competition.

Although the first Wales Women's team, it was not the first time a rugby jersey had been pulled on by Welsh Women in a competitive international match, prior to 1987, Welsh players had been selected to represent Great Britain, with their first outing in 1986.
