Cardiff-born Sam Warburton has had a very successful season during 2006-2007. Warburton, a member of the 2006-2007 Blues Academy, was part of the Blues U20 squad early on in the season that later blazed a trail through the U20 Reebok Regional Championships to win the title. In January 2007, he was named Principality Premiership player of the month after several man-of-the-match performances for Glamorgan Wanderers against Bridgend, Bedwas and Maesteg.

Warburton, who has a twin brother named Ben, is studying A Levels at Whitchurch High School and cites Richie McCaw and Lennox Lewis amongst his sporting heroes.

In March 2007, Warburton was handed the captain's armband by Justin Burnell against England U19 taking over from Josh Turnbull although the match was postponed at the last minute due to inclement weather. Warburton the turned out for Wales U19 against Cardiff RFC in a friendly match later on in the month.

At the end of March 2007, Warburton was named captain of the Wales U19 squad for the 2007 IRB U19 World Championships. He led his team through a successful tournament in which they triumphed over Samoa and Argentina in the Pool stages to reach the semi-final against New Zealand. Though defeated in this match Wales U19 fought bravely against Australia U19 in the 3rd place play-off, narrowly losing but earning a well-deserved fourth place in the IRB U19 World Rankings.
