| Rugby Football makes a considerable contribution to the lives of Welsh people. Well over half the population in Wales show an active interest in the game, whether as a player, a coach, an official, an administrator or simply a supporter.
Rugby in Wales also provides a healthy and enjoyable leisure-time pursuit, with many people being given the opportunity to develop their skills and test themselves, not only against each other but against other countries. Further, rugby football in particular, offers experience, which contributes to self-esteem and self-fulfilment, to confidence and personal development.
The quality of experience will depend on many variables such as facilities and organisation, but perhaps the most central factor is the quality, the leadership and the coaching. Coaching is central to performance improvements at all levels. Coaches work with a vast range of performers – some seeking enjoyment and purposeful participation, others concerned with making a living and some driven to achieve international honours. The quality of coaching is important to all.
Welsh society has, for a number of years, recognised that rugby in Wales makes a positive contribution towards human development and the quality of life and that coaches at all levels must be trained to provide safe, and enjoyable rugby experiences. To this end, the Welsh Rugby Union is continually working with the UKCC in Rugby Source Group, Sports Coach UK, Skills Active and Sports Council for Wales to develop a flexible coach development programme.
This programme will ensure that coaches moving into the ‘Elite Performance Game’ will be well prepared. By 2013 Wales will have a ‘World Class’ system for developing rugby coaches.
Our Mission - To create the world’s most respected rugby coaching system that delivers coaches who are fit for purpose in sufficient numbers at all levels and delivers the right coach to the right place at the right time for the needs of every player at every stage of their development.
- To create the best coach support system of any sport anywhere in pursuit of the above.
- To develop Welsh coaches to lead the world in player and team development.
