| Cardigan product Richard Lloyd Evans won 19 caps for Wales between 1993 and 1995. He made his debut in the famous Five Nations 10-9 victory over England in 1993. Evans has also represented the Wales B side and the Barbarians.
Evans incurred a serious ankle injury in the 1995 Five Nations match against France but recovered enough to represent Wales in the 1995 Rugby World Cup; he played against New Zealand and came on as a replacement against Ireland. Evans made history when he sued Olivier Merle, the French lock who had caused the injury through foul play. For the first time video evidence, of the foul, was accepted in French Court in the unprecedented case.
Domestically, Evans represented Llanelli RFC and finished his playing career with Cardigan RFC. He later played in the Bermuda Veterans Tournament. Evans’s international career was prematurely ended due to the ankle injury sustained in the French game and further aggravated during the World Cup. Evans now works as a fire-fighter based in Aberystwyth.
