Robin Sowden-Taylor was included in Warren Gatland's 2008 RBS Six Nations Grand Slam winning squad. He was called up to the Wales squad for the two-Test tour to Australia in May 2007, and made a replacement appearance in the second Test loss in Brisbane. In November 2007 he featured in the starting line-up, after selection by Wales Caretaker Coach Nigel Davies, to face South Africa in the inaugural Prince William Cup match at the Millennium Stadium.

Sowden-Taylor made his debut for Cardiff RFC in 2001. He has scored 7 tries during his time at the Blues to date, and captained the team in the 2005–2006 season, covering for injured skipper Rhys Williams.

The 2006–2007 season saw Sowden-Taylor make only eight appearances for the Blues after suffering a horrific ankle injury in the second game of the Magners League against the Ospreys in September.

Sowden-Taylor was also part of the Commonwealth Games Sevens squad that played in Melbourne in March 2006, and defeated South Africa to clinch the Plate trophy.

After sustaining a shoulder injury (having damaged the ligaments in his acromio-clavicular joint) in March 2008 following a Magners League game against the Llanelli Scarlets, Sowden-Taylor faced reconstructive surgery which would rule him out of the remainder of the 2007–2008 season, and Wales's two Test tour to South Africa in June.
