Age grade regional rugby received an overhaul for the 2004–2005 season with the introduction of the WRU Reebok Regional Championships. National age grade coaches were put into position from U16 to U20 levels to develop future professional players by exposing them to an intense and competitive environment. Former Wales and British Lion Rob Howley was appointed as the competition’s ambassadorial figurehead.
The WRU Reebok Regional Championships involved the four regions of Blues, Dragons, Ospreys and Scarlets playing against each other at U18 and U20 levels. Five teams would be present at U16 level as the Cardiff Blues were split into 'North' and 'South' because of their population and size. The three championships kicked off on October 19th 2004. Each team would play six games each in the two elder age groups whilst eight matches each would be played in the U16 category. The pool stages of the U18 and U20 tournaments were scheduled to end on March 9th, whilst the U16 pool stage was to finish on April 26th. Three Grand Finals would follow the pool stages, with at least two scheduled to be played at the Millennium Stadium on the last weekend of April 2005.
The U16 championship began with the Blues North taking on the Scarlets at Aberdare and the Blues South pitted against the Ospreys at Pentyrch. The South overcame their Osprey rivals in a narrow 10-8 win courtesy of an Adam Foley try and late penalty from captain Phil Williams. The Blues North weren’t as successful as the Scarlets showed their dominance from the start of the season; they attained a 27-15 victory, outscoring their opponents by three try scores to two with Daniel Evans adding twelve points with his boot.
Round two of the U16 tournament saw the Scarlets take on the second Blues region as they hosted the South at Stradey Park. The Blues were unable to attain their second successive victory of the championship as Matthew Lemon ran in a brace of tries for the Scarlets with teammate Geraint Peachment adding another; both of whom had scored tries in their initial match of the tournament. The Dragons U16 were unable to gain a first win of their tournament debut as the Ospreys clinched a 14-13 victory at the Old Parish, Maesteg. An injury time try from Dean Ronan and conversion from Nic Damjanovic snatched the narrow win.
Two weeks later in round three the Dragons hosted the Blues South but again lost by a single point. The South pulled off the narrow 8-7 victory despite having two men sin-binned during the event. The Blues North meanwhile suffered their second defeat of the championship as they went down 20-8 to the Ospreys at Aberdare.
The Dragons’ losing streak continued as they were defeated 22-11 by the Scarlets in round four but a week later they broke their losing form with a 7-0 victory over the Blues North. Back row forward Richard Jones attained the try whilst David Langdon added the final two points of the match. A further win for the Scarlets, 3-0 over the Ospreys, continued their winning streak in the U16 championship.
Inclement weather halted the sixth round of matches in the New Year but the games were rescheduled for the last week of January. The table-topping Scarlets incurred their first defeat of the championship to the Blues South at Pentyrch; the West Wales region fell 7-3 with Daniel Evans securing the only points for the men in red. On the same night the Ospreys secured a fantastic 25-11 win over the Dragons. Leigh Halfpenny and Tom Williams scored first half Osprey tries to push their interval lead to 10-8. Liam Osowicz gained a brace in the second period to seal the win leaving the Ospreys needing two wins from their last three games to secure a place in the final.
In the latter rounds of the competition the Dragons bounced back from their early losing streak by gaining a 20-13 win over the Scarlets. Tries from Matthew Williams, Jason Tovey and Gareth Dare aided the Dragons’ scoreline and did the Blues South a favour in halting the Scarlet progression in the table. The South secured a 16-10 victory over the Blues North and in doing so secured the top spot in the U16 championship table. Although their place in the final was secure the Blues South suffered a defeat at the hands of the Ospreys in early April. The narrow 16-15 win kept Osprey hopes alive of making the final thanks to an eleventh hour drop goal from Daniel Biggar. With the table so close at the tail end of the pool stages the dramatic win set up a winner-takes-all showdown with the Scarlets a week later at Ammanford RFC to decide the other finalist.
Competition ambassador Rob Howley commented at this crucial moment of the championship, “The U16 competition has been as eagerly contested as the U18 and U20 competitions. For the whole season to go down to the wire shows you just how competitive things have been.”
In the final match of the U16 Reebok Regional pool stage the Scarlets booked a place in the final with a 22-14 victory over the Ospreys at Stradey Park. Following the Scarlets’ run of fine results at the close of the championship, tries from Ricky Guest, Daniel Evans and Aled Jones pushed the region ahead. The Ospreys secured one try in reply from Liam Osowicz with the remainder of the points coming from the boots of Daniel Biggar and Leigh Halfpenny. In the other game of the evening the Blues North attained their first victory of the championship, defeating the Dragons 33-17. In this final pool stage match the North ran in six tries in the impressive win to end their season on a high.
The U16 final between the Scarlets and Blues South was staged at the Millennium Stadium which provided a fitting back-drop to this momentous occasion. The Scarlets achieved the accolade of U16 champions in the inaugural U16 Reebok Regional Championship as they overcame the Blues South 19-5. The Blues battled hard in this excellent game but a Lee Collier try was never likely to be enough to deprive the Scarlets of their victory. The star performer for the men in red was Daniel Evans as he notched a try, conversion and four penalties. Evans was selected for the Scarlets academy for the 2005–2006 season following his impressive performances in this newly formed age grade structure.
With the U18 title clinched by the Scarlets a weekend before the U16 and U20 fixtures, the Scarlets achieved a unique treble in the opening season of the WRU Reebok Regional Championships. Both titles at the Millennium Stadium were claimed by the Scarlets who gained a clean sweep in the inaugural Reebok Regional age grade competition. Reebok ambassador Rob Howley commented on the U16 and U20 finals, "Both were excellent games and to be honest we have seen two weekends of outstanding rugby. I think the future of the game in Wales looks particularly good, we seem to be bringing through a whole host of outstanding youngsters."
The WRU Reebok Regional Championships had, in the introductory season, proved a successful initiative and one that was likely to flourish.
