| The Scarlets and Ospreys each achieved a clean sweep of the age grade Reebok Regional Championships in the first and second years of the competition respectively. The Blues and Dragons hoped to emulate this feat in the 2006–2007 Championship having improved significantly in the previous season.
Mostyn Richards, High Performance Manager for the WRU commented, "We have been delighted with the first two seasons of Reebok Championship rugby and having spoken to the respective coaches during the summer, it looks as though we could be in for another season of top class age grade rugby. The great thing about last season was that our national age grade sides carried on from where the regional sides left off with Wales U19 winning the Six Nations grand slam and doing well at the IRB U19 World Championships."
A new format for the 2006-2007 season saw rounds of the three age grade competitions staged on a weekly basis with all but the U16 winding up by the end of January to give way to the international season. The U16 final would be staged a month later at the end of February. Victory in the 2005–2006 season finals saw the Ospreys start as favourites in the age grade championships, but the competition promised to be fierce from the Scarlets, who won the inaugural competition, and from the Blues and Dragons who were yet to taste tournament success.
A week after the U16 championship had commenced the U18 Reebok Regional Championship kicked off in equally exciting fashion. The U18 Ospreys, like the younger Osprey side, made an impressive start to their title defence as they defeated the Dragons 27-6 at Abertillery Park. Daniel Biggar, the U16 Ospreys captain of the previous season, had moved up an age grade and secured twelve points with his boot. Ryan Bayliss, Ashley Beck and Rory Pitman all scored tries as the Ospreys stretched their advantage to 20-3 at half time. The Dragons were unable to come back from this large deficit as Danny Ellis could only add to his first half penalty with another in the second period for the hosts.
The Blues met the Scarlets at Leckwith Stadium in Cardiff in a thrilling start to the U18 championship. The sides shared the spoils as they each secured twenty-six points with both sides dropping a goal in injury time. Blues tries were scored by Luke Fear and Jake Thomas as Joe Deacon added two conversions, two penalties and a drop goal. It was inside centre Phil Williams who dropped the goal thirty seconds from time to clinch a point for the hosts. David Zangouras, Jason Harris and a penalty try put the Scarlets in front in the second half with Daniel Etteridge adding a conversion, two penalties and a drop goal which seemed enough to gain a Scarlet win. However, Williams slotted the ball between the uprights to earn the Blues a point in the outstanding contest.
The second round fixtures saw the Ospreys host the Blues whilst the Scarlets hosted the Dragons at Stradey Park. The Blues secured a surprise victory at St Helen’s as they overpowered the defending champions to a 21-12 win and broke the Ospreys’ two year unbeaten home record. In dreadful weather conditions Kristian Phillips, with two tries and a conversion, kept the Ospreys in touch. Yet the Blues, who led 8-5 at the interval due to a Luke Fear try and Joe Deacon penalty, excelled after the break and secured the win with a try from Jake Thomas plus a conversion and two further penalties from the on-form Deacon.
The Scarlets gained their second draw of the championship as Simon Gardner crossed for a last gasp try at Stradey Park. The Scarlets gained a first half lead with a penalty but after Adam Hughes had crossed shortly after the interval, the Dragons went further ahead courtesy of a penalty from their outside half David Langdon. Heavy rain and high winds caused problems for both sides but Gardner’s late efforts ensured the spoils were shared as the final scores closed at 8-8.
Round three of the U18 championship saw the Ospreys host the Scarlets at St Helen’s as they aimed to return to their winning ways. The Scarlets were aiming for an elusive first win of the U18 championship as they had only secured two draws in their previous fixtures to date. However, they were easily beaten by a rampaging Ospreys side that eased to a 54-21 win with seven tries. Centre Ashley Beck, one of the form players in the championship, helped himself to a brace as did No.8 Rory Pitman and Kristian Phillips. Scrum half Anthony Buselli added the seventh as Daniel Biggar converted five tries and added three penalties for a personal nineteen point haul.
Ieuan Davies and Matthew Lemon attained tries for the Scarlets with Daniel Etteridge adding two penalties and a drop goal but the Scarlets were easily overpowered by the bonus point-winning Ospreys.
The other third round match saw the Blues host the Dragons at the Arms Park with the visitors searching for a first win of the season. Yet the Dragons failed to achieve the spoils as the Blues rode out 24-13 victors, topping the championship table in doing so. Four tries from Christian Dacey, Lewis Mills, James Loxton and Joe Xiberras gained a bonus point for the Blues as Joe Deacon added a couple of conversions to conclude the scoring. The Dragons, who bagged a point against the Scarlets at Stradey Park in their previous game, trailed 17-3 at half-time but rallied after the break. David Langdon added a second penalty to his first half effort whilst flanker Gareth Patterson attained a try, converted by Danny Ellis. Despite this the Dragons were the second best team of the evening and, following this defeat, remained at the foot of the table with just one point from three games.
The Ospreys hosted the Dragons at St Helen’s three weeks later, looking for another fantastic result similar to that achieved last time out. They again ran out emphatic winners as they secured the 44-14 triumph over the visitors. The Ospreys gained an early lead through Ryan Bayliss and took a 17-0 advantage into the break following a try from hooker Joe Beddow and two conversions and a penalty from the impressive Daniel Biggar. After the interval the Dragons staged a fightback and attained tries courtesy of Kyle Price and John Burgess; Danny Ellis converted both efforts to reduce the deficit further. However, the Ospreys proved too strong in the final quarter with Bayliss adding his second try and Sam Williams and Scott Hancock making sure of the bonus point. Biggar again impressed during the second half as he notched two conversions, a penalty and a drop goal to finish with seventeen points.
Ospreys High Performance Manager Dai Arthur commented on his side’s victory, “We were good early on and later on in the game, but all credit to the Dragons, they came back in the second half and made a real contest of it.”
The Blues met the Scarlets at Llandovery in round four as they sought to continue their impressive start to the season. With significant victories over the Ospreys and Dragons behind them, the Blues were understandably confident as they took on a Scarlets side that had endured mixed results during the season. In an evenly contested first half the Blues took a slender 10-6 advantage into the break. Rhys Williams scored a try for the Blues as Joe Deacon converted and slotted over a penalty whilst the six Scarlets points came from the boot of Daniel Newton. The match proved to be of two very different halves as the Blues later dominated the run of play. Christian Dacey, James Loxton, Rhys Downes and Lloyd Williams all secured tries to gain the 32-6 success and resultant bonus point away from home.
As a result of these matches both the Blues and the Ospreys had progressed into the U18 final, to be played on December 29th at Llandovery, with two rounds of pool matches still to be played. The last two rounds of the U18 championship consequently proved academic as the final had already been decided.
However, the penultimate pool matches threw up some fantastic results for the teams. The Blues inflicted a psychological blow on the Ospreys, a month before their rematch in the final, as they secured the 25-22 victory in front of a record attendance for the competition. Tries from Captain Jake Thomas, Christian Dacey and Lloyd Williams, and three conversions and a long range penalty from Joe Deacon, secured the win. High Performance Manager for the Blues region Gafyn Cooper was delighted with another excellent performance and commented, "It was another great night for the boys. The staging of the game could not have been better and the crowd was far and away the biggest we have played in front of.”
Meanwhile, the Dragons recorded a 34-10 victory over the Scarlets in their first win of the season at Abertillery Park. The Dragons gained a brace of tries from Ieuan Coombes and a solo score from Nathan Buck in the first half. Danny Ellis furthered the Dragons’ tally with three conversions and a penalty. A try from Kyle Price followed in the second half together with Ellis adding to his tally with the conversion and a dropped goal. Dragons High Performance Manager Ron Schottle was delighted with the all-round performance of a side that came under the guidance for the first time of recently-appointed coaches Gareth Lintern and Greg Woods. He commented after the victory, “We had some outstanding individual performances from the likes of Rhys Jenkins, but I was pleased with the manner in which they played as a team. It has lifted the confidence and proves to us all that they are a good side.”
The final a month later saw the Ospreys and Blues pitted against each other in the match at Llandovery. Though the Blues had recorded successive victories over the Ospreys during the season it promised to be a close affair as the Ospreys defended their title. Heavy rain and high winds made playing conditions difficult for both sides but it was the Blues that gained the first advantage after ten minutes played. A Joe Deacon penalty pushed the side ahead but the Ospreys struck back almost immediately with a try from the superb wing Liam Osowicsz. Daniel Biggar converted to stretch the Ospreys’ advantage.
Rhys Downes crossed the line in reply as Deacon converted for the Blues to gain a 10-7 lead. The Blues looked set to rattle up a healthy half-time advantage but an error from fullback James Loxton allowed Ashley Beck to gather the fluffed clearance kick and cross for a try. The Ospreys took their 12-10 advantage into the break looking to further add to their tally on the restart but when the kick off was dropped, the Blues assumed a position of promise and wing Joe Xiberas touched down in the corner to regain the Blues’ 15-12 lead. Biggar levelled the scores with a penalty soon after and as the game encroached into the final quarter, with conditions worsening, Osprey Chris Lewis enacted the decisive movement of the game. The fullback chipped over fellow number Loxton and followed up to cross for a try that Biggar again converted to hand the Ospreys the title, despite some heavy Blues pressure in the final ten minutes. The defending champions, the Ospreys, had retained their Reebok Regional U18 crown with the 22-15 victory.
The third place play-off saw once champions the Scarlets defeat the Dragons 20-11 after trailing 11-0 just before half time. The Dragons amassed their points from two Danny Ellis penalties and a try from Nathan Preece, but a Daniel Newton penalty just before half-time put the Scarlets on the board. The second half saw Scarlets Rhys Williams and Jason Harris cross the Dragons’ line with Newton converting one and adding a penalty with Harris adding the extras to his own five-pointer to salvage third place in the championship.
With the Ospreys having retained two of their championship titles and the Blues enjoying a much improved season, culminating in the clinching of the U20 trophy, the 2007–2008 Reebok Regional Championships promised to create exciting battles in all three age grades. The Scarlets would be looking to return to form and regain their winning streaks, having won all three age grade titles in the inaugural competition, whilst the Dragons would hope to redress the balance of being the only region not to have gained Reebok Championship silverware in the history of the competition.
