Glasgow fall at Rodney Parade
The Dragons have kicked off their European campaign with a win.
NEWPORT GWENT DRAGONS 33-22 GLASGOW

A brace of tries for wing Gareth Wyatt and 17 points from the boot of James Arlidge helped the Dragons get their Heineken Cup campaign off to a winning start at home to bogey side Glasgow.

The Scots had won on their last two visits to Rodney Parade, but the Dragons dominated much of this game and were well worth this victory which was sealed when Alidge slotted his second drop goal to open up a 10 point lead going into injury time.

With Bath and Toulouse awaiting in the group, a winning start was vital for the Dragons, while Glasgow threw everything at their opponents while having to come away without a losing bonus point.

The Dragons started with all the pressure, but that cost them as early as the fifth minute when they attacked on the Glasgow line only for a long pass to fall into the hands of visiting wing Lome Fa’atau. With the Dragons committed to all-out attack, he had a 95 yard run to the line but never looked threatened as he went all the way for the opening try.

Colin Gregor converted that and added a penalty before the Dragons started to take advantage of their overwhelming pressure and time spent attacking in the Scots 22.

First James Arlidge chipped away with a couple of penalties, but the turning point of the first half came when another attack brought the sin-binning of Scotland flanker Kelly Brown.

First the Dragons managed to work right wing Gareth Wyatt clear for their first try of the game and then Arlidge slotted a drop goal on the stroke of half-time to put the home side into a 14-10 lead at the break.

Arlidge extended that lead with a penalty just after half-time while Glasgow were still a man down, but then the Scots came back into it with centre Max Evans proving to be the most potent attacking threat.

He set up a chance for wing Hefin O’Hare, but the 5’ 8” former rugby league player could not quite stretch out to the line, then Evans went himself from close range and made it over the line for his side’s second try. Gregor converted to level the scores.

That stung the Dragons into action as a lucky break brought another try, the ball being dislodged from the grip of flanker Joe Bearman near the line but breaking kindly for Wyatt to be able to snap up his second score.

Both sides managed tries from close range, Colin Charvis going over for the home side and captain Ally Kellock for the visitors before Arlidge had the last word.
