Neath's Steve Martin has announced his intention to retire ahead of the 2008/09 season.
The lock who turned 34 last week made his Neath debut way back in 1993, has played for Llanelli RFC and was a key part of the Newport side that clinched the league titles in 2003/04.

Since returning to the Gnoll from Rodney Parade, Martin has captained the Welsh All Blacks for two seasons and won a record four Prinicipality Premiership titles and, last, season the double when he raised the Konica Minolta Cup. Martin is the onlyu semi-professional player to pick up five league winners medals.

He said: “Due to an persistent ankle injury, I have been advised to retire. At the start of pre season I still felt I could contribute to the squad with my experience, but with the medical advice and the reaction in training with my ankle, I must concede that the demands to play at this level are too much.

“I’ve spoken the Rowland and Patrick and though disappointed they were supportive and understood my decision to retire. May I take this opportunity too thank the players & coaches (past and present) whom I have played with in my career.

“In the 15 years that I have been associated with Neath RFC there have been many high and lows. I have made many friends in this time and it’s the players I will miss most. The club are heading in the right direction, have great vision in Rowland, Pat, Arwel and Lee Beach, I wish the boys well in the coming season. It was fitting to have my final appearance against St David’s whom I made my debut for Neath back in 1993.”

Director of Rugby Rowland Phillips commented: "Steve Martin has been a fantastic player for Neath Rugby over the years and we are truly sorry to see him leave. However he will always be a part of this club and im sure I can speak for the coaching staff and players in saying that I look forward to seeing him supporting us at the Gnoll during the season."
