| Neath 80 Llandovery 0
Former Drover Thomas not only helped the Gnoll side cruise to victory with a hat-trick of tries, 11 conversions and a penalty but recorded a new points record, overtaking Wales fly half James Hook's tally of 39 points in the 2004–2005 season.
The fixture coincided with a reunion of former Neath players to mark the 135th year that their club captain in 1873 became the club's first international player representing Scotland.
Neath opened the scoring after just three minutes when Thomas touched down for a try and duly converted to make it 7-0. The Blacks continued to pile on the pressure, and a poor kick from Llandovery scrum half Rob Walters, allowed Neath wing Matthew Nuthall to score a deserved try to take the score to 14-0. Just minutes later Neath were awarded a penalty which Thomas slotted over the posts with ease giving the Blacks a 17-0 lead.
The Neath pack dominated play and against a woeful Llandovery defence, a strong maul from the Neath front row saw fullback Gareth King run over the try line and yet another conversion from Thomas increased took the score to 24-0. Minutes later Thomas ran over for his second try and conversion, ensuring a bonus point before the first half had finished and a 31-0 lead.
Bad line-out ball from Neath allowed Llandovery to go on the attack. However, handling errors allowed Neath to capitalise on turnover ball. Scrum half Martin Roberts, on loan from the Ospreys, cut through the Drovers defence with a darting run that would make fellow Osprey Shane Williams proud. On the eve of half time Neath captain Lee Beach added another try, and Thomas with a conversion to increase the score to 38-0.
Neath continued where they’d left on at the beginning of the second half, as flanker James Merriman touched down. Momentum was with the home side and after a brief spell of Llandovery attack, Neath replacement Gerwyn Price ran over for a try in the 27th minute giving Neath a 52-0 advantage.
As Neath began a try rout in the latter stages of the half, Llandovery seemed to lose the plot completely and Neath touched down for three tries in quick session. Beach, replacement hooker Ashleigh James and King all scored and Thomas’s reliable boot gave Neath an unmatchable 73-0 advantage.
Thomas capped off his fine performance with a third try just before the whistle and duly converted setting the final score to 80-0, gaining not only plaudits from former players and Coach Rowland Phillips, but a deserved Man of the Match award too.
