In July 2007 Rob Appleyard, alongside Wayne Jones, was named as Assistant Coach to the Wales U20 national side. Appleyard is also a WRU National Skills Coach, based within the Scarlets Regional Academy. He has previous experience as a Defence Coach with the Ospreys and also gained coaching experience with Carmarthen Quins.

Appleyard gained nine representative caps for Wales, making his debut in the victory over Canada in 1997. enjoying one Five Nations Championship. He also represented Wales A and the Barbarians, whilst domestically his teams included Swansea, Sale, Cardiff RFC and the Cardiff Blues.
