Wales under-21's begin their season against their Scotland counterparts at the Brewery Field, Bridgend on Friday, February 13 (2.30pm).

It is a fixture that should see a large crowd watching Wales, the reigning Six-Nations champions, who have already won a warm-up against a New Zealand Youth under-21 side by 42-11 at the Arms Park, Cardiff.

Coach Chris Davey is expected to name his 22 players to meet Scotland on Monday, February 9, when he will trim down his current squad of 36.

However, outside half Gareth McCarthy (Cardiff) is already out of contention, having had a knee operation.

McCarthy's spot is likely to be hotly contested with Matthew Jones (Neath) and Nick MacLeod (Cardiff) among the front-runners as Pontypridd's Lee Thomas could be used as a centre.

Among the exciting new faces this season are the Llandovery wing Ifan Evans , Newport lock Luke Charteris, Swansea scrum halves Richie Rees and Rhodri Wells, Pontypridd wing Richard Fussell, Cardiff prop John Yapp and Newport flanker Richard Dale.

Meanwhile, Davey will coach UWIC on Saturday in the Lloyds TSB National League Division One against his old club Llanharan, whose president happens to be his father, Mog Davey.
