Llanharan had to work hard to stay in touch with leaders Maesteg, but though they struggled to defeat a battling Llangennech by 21-15, they remain unbeaten with 18 wins and a draw from their 19 matches.

With Maesteg having no match, Llanharan have moved up to 12 points behind, but have four matches in hand. "We had to surive a first quarter in which they were 12-3 down," said Llanharan spokesman Hugh Smith. "We gave two tries away, but the yellow-carding of a visiting player helped us get back."

Scrum half and captain Chris Davies pounced on a home error for the first Llangennech try and ace centre Mark Bowen raced in for his 21st of the season with fly half Mark Jones converting one.

Marc Davies placed a penalty to make him the first man in Wales to score 300 league points and then No 8 Colin Malone plunged over, before lock and captain Gareth Edwards scored a try and Davies kicked two penalties and a conversion for a 21-12 interval lead, with only a Mark Jones penalty following in the second half.

Bonymaen played uncontested scrums throughout the game at Whitland and lost 13-12 despite four penalty goals by Gareth Jones, who also missed with a late effort. Steve Gerard and later Lee Glanville snatched Whitland tries and Aled Davies kicked a winning penalty.

Blackwood ran in tries by David Harris, Rob Heel, Anthony Hares, hooker Mike Cardwell and Rhys Davies as they defeated Treorchy 45-3. Jeremy Lloyd placed three conversions and four penalties and Rhys Stone kicked a Treorchy penalty.

Rumney were going splenidly at Brynmawr, leading 19-14 and the home side havng had a forward red-carded, when teenage centre Gareth Bowen suffered a broken ankle. Then, Brynmawr scored 30 more points to win 44-19.

Craig Meates (2), Gareth Morris, Matthew Price, Dave Neill, Simon Parry and Richard Dennington scored the Brynmawr tries and Jason Williams converted two and dropped a goal, while Neil Coles, Paul Niblett and Ian McIntyre crossed for Rumney with Adam Harding converting two.
