Barry Girls Get Close Up At International!

This includes their first home and away matches, going to see their first international (Wales v Canada) at the Millennium Stadium and achieving their first rugby awards through Dragon Sport.

However, what will stick in the memory was the first time they were ball girls at an international match.

The match concerned was Wales v England in this year's Six Nations. Surely this was in the Millennium Stadium? No, wrong. It was Cardiff Arms Park as the match concerned was played between the Senior Women's sides.

When the girls arrived they were met by Richard Hodges who kitted the girls out in identical tops and briefed them on their role during the game. Nerves were on edge because the English are a mighty foe, many playing within a professional set up that has had over a million pounds invested in them.

As the English anthem began it was obvious that the supporters were out in force too. Silence fell, and the Welsh team raised their heads and began to sing. The crowds voice was soon to overwhelm the singing from the pitch and at that point nerves settled. If there was a job to be done, these girls had the minds and the hearts to do it.

It was an action packed game where at no point did the fact these were women detract from the quality of play with hard hits, crunching tackles and fast open play all served up to keep the crowd warm on a freezing night.

The final score of 69-7 shows England are fast and strong and well invested in. Wales put up a good fight and I'm sure if converted pounds in to points Wales are better value for money.

What did Barry girls get from this? A sense of pride, good role models and a vision of the future in which they may well share.
