| Wales took an early lead when fly-half Rhys Jones put up a cross-field kick for winger Jimmy Norris to run on to and score. Scrum-half Robert Lewis was the next player over the try-line and fullback Martin Thomas made it 17-3 after 30 minutes when he scored the first of his two tries.
Huge Italian prop Gabriele Turroni and winger Marco Sepe struck back for Italy, but second tries to Thomas and Norris allowed Wales to ease clear.
