DEVELOPMENT AND STUDENTS FALL SHORT
6 February 2006, 10:09 pm
By WRU
Welsh Students were first to kick off, meeting their Scottish counterparts at Peffermill Playing Fields, Edinburgh.  Wales dominated in the scrums and the line-outs from the outset.  The back-row, led by Captain Kathryn Gubb, put in some vociferous tackling, with Lisa Newton putting in an outstanding work-rate.

Through some Welsh indiscipline, Scottish Students moved into a 6-0 lead in the first 15 minutes.  Undeterred, Welsh Students continued to dominate, moving play down continually closer to their try-line, with some notable ball-carrying from Sian Morgan.  Spying an opportunity, the wirey Scrum Half, Mia Brunner, took the quick tap to allow the forwards to drive over, only to be denied by a held-up decision.

The Scottish left wing stole the show during the remainder of the half, crossing for two outstanding tries, one of which was converted, to bring the half-time score to 18-0.

After the sin-binning of a Scottish back-rower, Welsh Students' forward power tipped the balance, putting the ball 'up the jumper' and driving over for their first 5 points, courtesy of Heidi Nilsen.

Welsh Students' final points of the game came through the forwards again, with another huge drive pushing Jessica Bain over.

Down in Aylesbury, the Development squad suffered a 47-5 defeat at the hands of an exceptionally strong England Students side.  The only recompense of a disappointing performance was a Christie Thompson try to bring in their only points of the day.
