Wales Sevens gave themselves a boost towards qualification for the 2009 Dubai RWC Sevens as they banked back-to-back European qualifying titles with victory in Tbilisi, Georgia, over the weekend.
The victory in Georgia also guarantees the Sevens a place in the Hanover Sevens on July 12-13th. After winning in Odense, Denmark, last month, Coach Gareth Baber's squad beat Ukraine 45-5 in the Tbilisi final to guarantee their place in Hanover where the top five teams from that 12-strong competition will earn their ticket to Dubai next year.

Wales conceded just three tries, against Cyprus in their opening Pool 2 match, another in their 28-5 semi-final win over Moldova and they then again restricted their opponents to a single score as they won the final in style.

"To win both tournaments put us in the best possible position we could achieve and to concede only three tries here in Georgia was a massive plus and shows the way we are trying to play," said Baber.

"It all bodes well for Hanover next month and this weekend was all about a great squad effort when we ended up with only seven fit players for the final.

"However, Andy Powell was a massive threat with the ball in hand and Lee Williams, Martin Roberts and James Merriman were also outstanding considering what huge demands the players have been under over the last few weeks."

Wales's results in Tbilisi:
Pool 2
Wales 36 Cyprus 7
Wales 50 Bulgaria 0
Wales 22 Georgia 0
Wales 26 Israel 0

Semi-final
Wales 28 Moldova 5
Final
Wales 45 Ukraine 5
