| Artistry is synonymous with Welsh rugby. From legendary scrum half Gareth Edwards to wing Ieuan Evans, the Principality has long been revered for its creative ingenuity on the pitch.
The Welsh Assembly Government is asking secondary school students to design an advert for inclusion in the official programme for the IRB Junior World Championship Final to be held at Swansea’s Liberty Stadium on 22nd June.
‘Tomorrow’s Artist’ – as the competition is called – offers budding artists the opportunity to promote themselves, their school and Wales.
The aim of the promotion is threefold: to capture the spirit of rugby at the Junior World Championship, to promote an “Eat Healthy” message and to promote rugby across Wales and the rest of the world.
The brief is open-ended. The design can reflect the culture, history or sport of Wales, or it can be of a more abstract persuasion.
Participating schools will this Wednesday attend a training session involving one of the international teams based in their area and take part in a question-and-answer session with players and team officials afterwards. They will also receive tickets to pool matches, plus sets of rugby balls, training bibs and cones.
The winning artist and two guests, meanwhile, will receive VIP tickets to the final.
John Williams, Legacy Manager for the Welsh Rugby Union, said the response to the art competition, and also the Adopt a Nation programme, had been “very positive”, with almost 1,000 tickets to pool matches already allocated to participating schools in the Swansea area alone.
“The feedback has been excellent,” Williams said. “We expect in excess of 5,000 school children to attend the various training sessions on Wednesday.”
Tomorrow’s Artist entries must be submitted by this Friday (June 6th) to the Welsh Rugby Union, Millennium Stadium, Gate 4, Westgate Street, Cardiff, CF10 1NS. The WRU Media Department will decide on the winning entry.
