Some of Welsh rugby’s best silverware will be on display at the Royal Welsh Show next week when stars from the Wales Sevens squad, Principality Premiership winners Neath and Konica Minolta Cup champions Llandovery display their prized possessions.
The Welsh Rugby Union will have a strong presence at Wales’s top annual show and the four pieces of silverware won by the Sevens stars around the world last season will be on show with the top two domestic trophies.

Wales Sevens had a hugely successful second season back on the IRB Sevens circuit and picked up trophies in their first four tournaments of the season. After that they reached the Cup semi-finals at London and Edinburgh.

Wales were Bowl winners at the Dubai and Adelaide tournaments and lifted the Plate at the South Africa and Hong Kong Sevens events. Wales Sevens captain Johnathan Edwards and some of his Sevens teammates will be present at the Royal Welsh on Wednesday with all four trophies.

They will be helping WRU development officers run rugby activity sessions for children on the sports arena and helping WRU staff to give advice and sell tickets for Wales’s summer Invesco Perpetual Series international matches against Argentina and France.

Some of Neath Rugby’s new signings including Dafydd Lockyer, Howard Thomas and fellow Wales Sevens squad members James Merriman and Lee Beach will be on site on Monday with the Premiership trophy. Neath won that title for the third time in a row last season.

On Tuesday, the Llandovery stars who beat Cardiff at the Millennium Stadium in the Konica Minolta Cup will be displaying their trophy and telling the tale of how they became the first team to take the cup out of South Wales.

Both sets of players will be helping youngsters improve their rugby skills, signing autographs and chatting to fans. On Thursday, Women and Girls will be helping with the rugby activities, encouraging girls to take part in rugby.

Wales Sevens captain Johnathan Edwards said, “It’s been a fantastic year for us as a Sevens squad. We travel the world competing in Sevens tournaments – and we get a lot of support from Welsh fans in far-flung places such as Hong Kong, Dubai and Adelaide – but it will be great to share some of our experience with our fans back home in Wales.

“Sevens is a great game to play, it really improves skill levels in attack and defence and hopefully we can help encourage some youngsters to take an interest when we help run some rugby skills sessions with the development officers on Wednesday.”

As well as the rugby activities, visitors to the WRU trailer will find information on all elements of the game, including refereeing and women's and girls' rugby. There will also be competitions and games – and a chance to take part in the recording of the WRU’s weekly podcast.

WRU international referee Nigel Owens will also be on hand to discuss the laws of the game and his recent experiences down under. He is in charge of the vital Bledisloe Cup match between the All Blacks and Australia this weekend to decide the Tri-Nations title in New Zealand.

Wales’s Invesco Perpetual Summer Series is just around the corner so next week’s show is an ideal opportunity for fans to snap up tickets for all the family.

Fans will be able to get their tickets for the two Millennium Stadium games – Wales v Argentina on August 18th and Wales v France on August 26th – from just £10 for children and £20 for adults.

Wales’s Rugby World Cup kit will also be on display and available for pre-order.

WRU Group Chief Executive, Roger Lewis, is very positive about the contribution the WRU roadshows are having.

"As a Union, we have made it our business to focus on the community as vital to grassroots rugby and the future of our game. It is important to get out into the community and we are thrilled to be returning to the Royal Welsh Show,” he said.

“We’ve already had a presence at the Urdd Eisteddfod, in Carmarthen in May, and will also be present at the Eisteddfod Genedlaethol, in Mold in August.

"Our presence within the Sports Arena at the Royal Welsh gives our development officers and players the chance to pass on some rugby skills. It will be the perfect opportunity for anyone interested in rugby to ask questions and find out about the game in their area.

"There will be lots going on all week and I’m sure fans will also be pleased that they can pick up tickets for our exciting Invesco Perpetual Summer Series matches against France and Argentina.”
