The Welsh Rugby Union and Reebok today launched the new player shirts to be worn by Wales at this year's Rugby World Cup.
Wales will combine the tradition of a bold, Welsh red colour with the most modern technology available when they kick-off their Rugby World Cup campaign in September.

WRU official kit suppliers Reebok have designed a jersey which will be the perfect fit for every position to help Wales go further than ever before at the biggest sporting event of the year.

Having worked closely with Gareth Jenkins and his squad, Reebok, now in the 11th year of their relationship with Wales's national sport, have delivered a perfect-fit playing shirt with some unique, potentially match-winning characteristics.

The kit manufacturer have produced two fits of shirt for the Welsh team: a skin-tight fit to reduce the opportunity of getting tackled and a customised, looser fit to enable front five forwards to bind and lift.

There is also a third shirt with a more traditional design and fit for supporters.

Wales Head Coach Gareth Jenkins is particularly pleased with the design and fit of the shirt which he believes could give his side an edge over Rugby World Cup rivals.

"Reebok have been true professionals in their support of the team's needs and they should be commended for coming up with a wonderful product, which should give us the extra edge we require on the international stage," said Jenkins.

"I'll leave the explanations about the technological aspects of these garments to the experts – and there are many things this new shirt offers players – but one key request from us was that they would be more difficult to grab hold of in the tackle and Reebok have certainly delivered.

"You need to look into anything and everything that can give you an edge at the elite level of sport and the detail and technical know-how that has gone into these jerseys is phenomenal.

"We are talking about the cutting edge of design for sports clothing here, with specific design criteria going into different shirts worn by players in different positions – that's how detailed Reebok have been – and the Wales team are extremely grateful for their efforts and proud of the results."

In welcoming the new shirts, which will be worn for the first time when Wales kick-off their Pool B campaign against Canada in Nantes on September 9th, WRU Group Chief Executive Roger Lewis said: "We've had a fantastic relationship with Reebok down the years and this will be the third Rugby World Cup tournament they have supported us through.

"I'm particularly pleased with the look of the jersey which maintains the traditional Welsh red colour while making use of the latest in technology to improve performance.

"There is also a looser fitting replica available for fans to buy which I'm sure is going to be popular around the world of rugby.

"Reebok first became official kit suppliers to the Wales for their international against the Barbarians in August, 1996.

"That was the first of 125 Test matches in which the Welsh team has been proud to wear the Reebok strip up to the second Test in Australia this summer. The current four year deal runs through to 2008."

All of the Reebok Rugby World Cup range will hit the shops on August 2nd, but fans can pre-order online from today via www.wru.co.uk/shop

The shirts are priced at £70 for both fits of the pro-fit jersey and £50 for the looser-fitting supporters' shirt. Junior shirts are also available at £35.
