WRU Group Chief Executive Roger Lewis was last night (Tuesday) awarded with an Honorary Fellowship of Cardiff University in recognition of his 30-year career within the media, music and sports worlds.
Lewis, who was appointed to the Welsh Rugby Union in October after leaving his job as Managing Director of ITV Wales said, “It is a great honour that I will share with my friends, family and colleagues.”

Lewis’s earlier career consisted of wide-ranging roles within the music industry including Head of Music for BBC Radio 1, Managing Director at EMI Records, world wide President of the Decca Record Company and Managing Director and Programme Controller of Classic FM.

He has also held numerous non-executive positions including Chair of Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Deputy Chair, Boosey and Hawkes, Director of Liverpool European Capital of Culture, and was a Trustee of the Wales Millennium Centre. He holds a B.Mus(Hons) degree from Nottingham University, is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and is an Honorary Member of the Royal College of Music.

He added, “It is very satisfying that Cardiff University recognised my two passions – music and sport – and the award demonstrates how you can make business sense in both fields.

"I thoroughly enjoyed my career within radio, television and records and now I am confident we will do everything in our power to achieve the same success in driving forward the vision and objectives of the Welsh Rugby Union and the Millennium Stadium.”

Also receiving Honorary Fellowships at the Cardiff Business School’s graduation ceremony in St David’s Hall yesterday were BBC Wales controller Ms Menna Richards, Evan Davies, the BBC’s Economics Editor, Miss Barbara Wilding, Chief Constable of South Wales Police, broadcaster and journalist Patrick Hannan and BBC and S4C rugby commentator Huw Llywelyn Davies.
